This glossary contains words that people who work in a veterinary clinic can use
- cage
- noun
- A cage is a structure of wire or metal bars in which birds or animals are kept. I hate to see birds in cages.
- Example: Trapping is considered a fairly ineffective method of control in rural areas; live-capture cage traps are used by some gamekeepers but do not account for many of the foxes caught.

- surgery
- noun
- the branch of medical practice that treats injuries, diseases, and deformities by the physical removal, repair, or readjustment of organs and tissues, often involving cutting into the body.
- Example: Could the study of these species be the answer to minimizing brain damage injury after heart surgery or stroke?

- stethoscope
- noun
- Instrument used to listen to sounds produced in the body.
- Example: I use my stethoscope on the cat.

- vaccine
- noun
- Solution of weakened or modified pathogen cells which is injected into the body in order to stimulate the production of antibodies to a disease.
- Example: An example of patients being active is the case of the single MMR vaccine against separate injections.

- A compound or preparation used for the treatment or prevention of disease, especially a drug or drugs taken by mouth.
- Example: Globalisation accentuates poverty and social inequities instead of being the medicine to cure these problems.

- Something (such as a drug) that relieves pain.
- Example: Prescribed pain killers also took the pain away.

- noun
- Instrument for examining the ear.
- Example: The ear examination. This involves inserting an otoscope into the ear canal which allows you to view the canal and the tympanic membrane.

- euthanasia
- noun
- The act or practice of killing or permitting the death of hopelessly sick or injured individuals (such as people or domestic animals) in a relatively painless way for reasons of mercy.
- Example: Thanatology includes suicide, euthanasia, bereavement, sudden death and protracted death.

- noun
- Optical instrument that magnifies images of objects invisible to the naked eye by means of a lens or a lens system.
- Example: They are large enough to be seen under a light microscope, but a detailed examination can only be carried out using an electron microscope.

- noun
- A hollow, cylinder-shaped piece of equipment used for sucking liquid out of something or pushing liquid into something, especially one with a needle that can be put under the skin and used to inject drugs, remove small amounts of blood, etc.
- Example: It is better to use a larger syringe to give a smaller injection because you don't have to draw up so far, therefore more control over needle as you plunge.

- The pointed hollow end of a hypodermic syringe.
- Example: Fines needle aspiration was performed and sent for biological diagnosis.

- noun
- A sudden sharp pain in the side of the body, caused by strenuous exercise.
- Example: The patient was quite comfortable, she felt a little tenderness and discomfort in her chest due to the stitch's and scar but had no breathlessness or cough.

- noun
- A room where a veterinarian examines and talks to patients.
- Example: The veterinarian examines the animal in his consultation room.

- thermometer
- noun
- An instrument for measuring and indicating temperature, typically one consisting of a narrow, hermetically sealed glass tube marked with graduations and having at one end a bulb containing mercury or alcohol that expands and contracts in the tube with heating and cooling.
- Example: However, a digital thermometer can be used for more accurate temperature readings, thus human errors could be reduced.

- anesthesia
- noun
- Insensitivity to pain, especially as artificially induced by the administration of gases or the injection of drugs before surgical operations.
- Example: Operative treatment under general anesthesia is required for approximately 4-5% of paediatric fractures.

- A medicine or other substance which has a physiological effect when ingested or otherwise introduced into the body.
- Example: This type of drug is often mixed with other substances known as diluents or adulterants.

- Farm animals regarded as an asset.
- Example: Main roles undertaken by volunteers are habitat management of National Nature Reserves, administrative assistance, bird ringing, invertebrate and botanical surveying, livestock monitoring, or organizing educational visits and walks as leaders.

- noun
- A contagious and fatal viral disease of dogs and other mammals that causes madness and convulsions, transmissible through the saliva to humans.
- Example: Foxes are often associated with rabies and, although there is none in Britain at present, there has been call for better studies into fox densities so that, in the unlikely event of an outbreak, control strategies could be more easily formulated.

- noun
- Analysis of urine by physical, chemical, and microscopical means to test for the presence of disease, drugs, etc.
- Example: Urinalysis: bHCG: Positive Ketones + Leucocytes ++ Protein + These results are suggestive of a pregnancy.

- noun
- The process or occupation of taking radiographs to assist in medical examinations.
- Example: Contrast radiography uses a radiocontrast agent, a type of contrast medium, to make the structures of interest stand out visually from their background.
